Every year, organizations lose valuable expertise, relationships, and operational continuity as experienced employees retire. Most companies manage retirement as an administrative exit - not a strategic workforce transition. The result:
Retirement is inevitable. How companies manage it is optional - and a source of competitive advantage.

Organizations that support employees through well-managed retirement transitions benefit from:

Having a plan for your life after work, or the idea of a plan, is so important. Statistics show that not having a plan for how to spend time in your retirement can have a negative impact on your health. And, not having a plan has also been shown to put stress on relationships increasing the likelihood of divorce.

At the School of Retirement, we help you overcome any fears about retirement and we explore together how to discover meaning and joy for the years ahead. Retirement may be months or years away, but it is never too soon to reflect on your passions and set intentions for a fulfilling future.

As my nephew Tucker likes to tell me, the most important thing when doing something new is to start. No making excuses for putting off action.
ASSIGNMENT ONE
A good first step when formulating a plan for retirement is asking yourself, “What DON’T I want retirement to be?”. Grab a piece of paper (real or digital) and start writing bullets of what you do not want your retirement to be. Ask family and friends what they might put on the list which may spark new thinking for you. Circle or underline the 5 bullets you feel most strongly about.

You found yourself once before - back in elementary school.
What was your first big adventure by yourself? What does your memory focus on when you think back to when you were 9 or 10 years old? This was a time of discovery. Retirement is another time of discovery. Can you give yourself permission now to explore again?
ASSIGNMENT TWO
Write your 10 year old self a letter. What life advice would you give your younger self?

“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
During your 2nd Act, which is mostly defined by work, family and relationships, you had a kind of personal scorecard to keep track of your successes and screw-ups. In your 3rd Act, you don't have the same scorecard.
ASSIGNMENT THREE
If you went into the forest alone for a month with no computer or phone, who would you be? Tell someone.

I have over 20+ years experience in management education. Working for Top 5 global business schools, I help companies and people learn to thrive in the face of transitions, complexity and uncertainty. A lot of my work focuses on helping people get things done. This includes helping people "look in the mirror" discovering behaviors, attitudes and mindsets to achieve their goals. The benefits touch both the company and the individual.
The School of Retirement offers consulting for companies who want to best manage retirement transitions and coaching for individuals, couples, and small groups.
COMPANIES
How companies support the transition of their employees from team member to alumni can add value on many levels. Retaining valuable knowledge while enhancing culture and vitality are positive outcomes.
ONE-TO-ONE COACHING
One-to-one coaching helps you plan for and get started getting the most from your 3rd Act.
COUPLES
Couples rarely retire at the same time and in the same way. If you are in a relationship, exploring who you will become together with your partner is very important. Communicating and sharing is key to achieving a 3rd Act where you can both become who you want to become.
SMALL GROUP COACHING
You may have friends who are also thinking about life after work. I coach groups of up to six people. Coaching in a group means you will have friends who can support each other as you get started, who you can explore with, and who can continue the journey with you into the years ahead.
